Extension and reconfiguration of a house in the Bo Kaap to bring in light, air and a sense of space to a rather gloomy property. By adopting the flat roofed typology of the neighbourhood, we have been able to add an additional storey for a generous bedroom suite with views towards the city and the mountain. and move the living space up to look out over the raised garden terrace.
We explored a variety of options. one working with the space below a steeply pitched roof, one with a flat roof, and one with a hybrid form, retaining the pitch at the front but tapering to flat at the rear, to avoid the uphill neighbours looking in.
By Stacking the stairs and the services, we are able to open the house up from front to rear, allowing for cross ventilation and a play of light. Rather than a double volume living room, we provide a double volume terrace, forging a relationship between all of the main spaces and the garden, the real living room of this house in the city.
